Band History

In the mid 1970s a brass band was formed in Queensferry High School by the then principal teacher of music, John Gilmour, who had played in brass bands previously. This band featured in the life of the school as well as the local community, participating in civic events and on two occasions toured abroad in Norway and Germany.

In the early 1990s a group of parents met in the school and proposed that a youth band be formed to allow students the opportunity to further develop their brass banding on leaving school, and they formed a committee to further this project.

Success followed, in the first instance being awarded lottery funding to provide instruments for use in the youth band, now a separate entity from the school. This coincided with the appointment to the music staff of brass tutor James Anderson, who is remains Musical Director of the band. The newly formed youth band proved successful and had as honorary president, Stephen Hendry, World Snooker Champion and a former pupil of Queensferry High School.

Success in the contest field followed when the band won the Scottish Youth Championship on two occasions – 1997 and 1999 – then gaining a creditable 4th place and being awarded the trophy for the most promising band, at the UK Championships in Manchester in 2000.

The band’s development continued and in 2004, the band entered the field of adult brass banding, registering with the Scottish Brass Band association and operating under the rules and conditions of that organisation.
